Dental Hygienists Know Their Worth – Does The View?

Yes, dental hygienists are a vocal group.  For those dentists who utilize their hygienists effectively, they know those RDHs in their treatment rooms are far more than “teeth cleaners”.   They have been trained to perform oral exams to find all kinds of abnormal situations.  They can intelligently talk to their clients about their medications and the potential effects in their mouth.  They can help explain the benefits of dental implants to replace missing teeth.

No wonder there was such a response from hygienists when a recent episode of The View grossly under-acknowledged their educational requirements.  The professional dental hygienists know that they are treating inflammation and care about the healing that must occur following scaling and root planing.  Perhaps that is why we’ve received such a great response from hygienists who are looking for a product to relieve the inflammatory signs and symptoms, particularly after a procedure like SRP.

Yes, dental hygienists perform valuable services for their patients and their employers.  They are educated for a specific role in the dental community and rightfully proud of their profession.

PeriZone Team’s Positive Experience at ADHA CLL 89th Annual Session

We’ve just returned from Phoenix (which turned out to be a great preview for the heat in the northeast this week).  PerioPatch® was launched at the ADHA meeting in 2011 so it was a wonderful anniversary for us to celebrate with all of the hygienists who helped to make PerioPatch a success.

So many hygienists came up to our booth to tell us what good things they have heard about PerioPatch and the way it helps to control oral surgery pain and promote healing.  When this hydrogel patch is applied to the affected area, where it absorbs excess wound exudates, we hear the word “soothing” from just about everyone who reports back to us.

What we love about talking to fellow hygienists is the fact that they are inquisitive and come up with so many different ways they would like to use the PerioPatch® in their practice settings.  Using the patch after SRP makes so much sense to help control gingival pain post-procedurally.  We were able to share data about the reduction of GCF following placement in that scenario.  The subject of wound healing is a hot topic right now and to have been able to introduce this product has been an important addition to the MIS Implants product line.

We encourage all clinicians to take advantage of our offer to try a sample patient pack (six patches).  We are confident you will find the patients to be very receptive to this unique product.  Whether it is used for an extraction site, post-SRP, or any other oral tissue wound, the PerioPatch will promote healing while it reduces the signs and symptoms of inflammation.  For those hygienists we spoke with who had not yet tried the PerioPatch, were very enthusiastic about bringing something new to their practice.  The simplicity of the PerioPatch continues to be a strong draw for those who want to bring the newest proven products to their patients.

PeriZone Tips on Proactive Dental
Hygiene Preparedness

If you are a dental hygienist, have you ever felt slightly unprepared at work? Has a patient ever posed a question that you didn’t quite know how to answer? Has a patient ever asked you about a product that you didn’t even know existed? Have you ever been in the operatory and wished that you had a specific instrument or product because it would have worked so well for the patient sitting in your chair?

I experience all these scenarios – frequently. That’s because in addition to my full-time job at MIS Implants’ oral health division, PeriZone, as a PerioPatch® product specialist, my Saturdays are spent as a temp hygienist at different dental practices.

My temp assignments vary from general and periodontic to pediatric practices. Within each type of practice, there are varying availabilities of instruments to work with, products to utilize, and samples to distribute. Whenever I find myself lacking something, I always make it a point to make a suggestion to the doctor or office manager. Sometimes, they are unaware that the suggested product exists. Other times, they realize they simply ran out of it and make sure it is reordered.

An example of such an instance was just last week, when I was providing home care instructions for a patient with braces. He and his parents had not heard of proxy brushes, and when I looked for samples, they were all gone. I was able to pull up a photo of the product on the operatory computer, but I would have liked to do a demonstration while he was in my chair. When I finished with my patients for the day, I mentioned to the office manager that they were out of proxy brushes, and the assistants put them on their ordering list.

In any case, it was a simple suggestion that showed my concern for the office and my patients.

Preparation and staying well informed are keys to success in all careers, especially in the dental field. In addition, it is our responsibility to heighten and maintain the standard of dental care for our patients. This means preparing ourselves with the knowledge and providing the office with the tools (i.e., equipment and products) to deliver optimal care.

Be proactive and equip yourself and your office in advance, and you’ll find that you and your patients will be much happier.

PerioPatch® Hydrogel Dressing Mechanism of Action
Video Well Received During Chicago
Midwinter Meeting

The 2012 Chicago Midwinter Meeting was not only the first CMW appearance for MIS Implants’ PeriZone Product Division and the PerioPatch® oral wound dressing, it was the launchpad of the PerioPatch®’s mechanism of action (MOA) animated video.

The video was played continuously in the MIS/PeriZone exhibit booth to demonstrate how PerioPatch® absorbs oral wound exudates and reduces signs and symptoms associated with oral inflammation, such as gingival pain, redness, and swelling.

What’s more, the MOA video was the topic of discussion during an exclusive MIS Implants/PeriZone cocktail party that was attended by a who’s who of dental industry journalists, thought leaders, and industry luminaries.

The cocktail reception, held at Cité at Lake Point Tower, featured special guests Drs. Ray C. Williams and David W. Paquette, esteemed periodontists, educators, and researchers, who are PeriZone clinical advisors for the PerioPatch®.

Dental Products Report senior editor Renee Knight was on hand during the cocktail reception to conduct on-camera interviews with Drs. Williams and Paquette and ask them why they became involved with PeriZone, the company, and PerioPatch®, the product.

According to Dr. Williams, the PerioPatch® is “Very simple, easy to use… That’s why I’m excited about it.”

Dr. Paquette said, “We’ve had a long history of site-specific or localized products and this is part of that, so it’s a very natural fit.” He added, “I’m excited to introduce this (PerioPatch®) to my patient treatment protocols. I’m seeing some good results on patients that I’m treating with gingival and periodontal inflammation and irritation.”

Want to find out more about how PerioPatch® works as an oral wound healing aid?

The complete video interviews with Drs. Williams and Paquette are posted on www.dentalproductsreport.com and the PerioPatch® MOA video is now posted on www.PerioPatch.com.

How Does PerioPatch® Work to Relieve Gingival Pain and Promote Natural Healing of Oral Tissue?

Since its launch less than a year ago, there’s been a lot of dental industry buzz about the PerioPatch, a hydrogel dressing that uses all-natural ingredients to relieve oral inflammation, ranging from cheek irritation caused by orthodontic braces to post-surgical pain associated with dental implant procedures.

Legions of dentists and patients have been very impressed with PerioPatch’s oral pain reducing and oral mucosal healing properties. They tell us PerioPatch works! Then, in the same breath, they ask, “How?”

That is why MIS Implants, the parent company of PeriZone™, the maker of PerioPatch, developed an easy-to-understand animated video that demonstrates the hydrogel wound dressing’s unique mechanism of action, or MOA.

This MOA video will get non-stop play at the MIS booth (# 4727) at the Chicago Midwinter Meeting, and demonstrate how PerioPatch works for healing of oral ulcerations and other forms of oral wounds by reducing gingival pain, swelling, and other inflammatory symptoms.

Not going to the Chicago Midwinter Meeting? No worries! The PerioPatch MOA video is now posted on PerioPatch.com. See for yourself how this unique hydrogel patch absorbs oral wound exudates, promotes accelerated healing of gingival tissue, and prevents additional oral irritation or injury.

If anyone you know asks how PerioPatch works as an oral wound healing aid, just send them this link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3txjuyv6jto&feature=player_embedded.

If they will be attending the Chicago Midwinter Meeting, tell them to visit PeriZone at booth # 4727 – They can watch the PerioPatch MOA video and ask us any questions.

When Dentures Attack and Cause
Oral Tissue Pain

PeriZone™, the oral care division of MIS Implants, recently submitted its PerioPatch® hydrogel patch for an independent evaluation conducted by a leading dental magazine. Although the positive results won’t be available for a couple of months, we were pleasantly surprised to learn how many clinical evaluators found PerioPatch to be useful and effective on gingival pain and oral irritation caused by dentures. That’s right! One of the most common complaints from newly-fitted and longtime denture wearers alike is that these prosthetics often cause gum inflammation and oral pain. Sometimes frustration with ill-fitting dentures and their resulting irritations causes their owners to avoid wearing them – never an attractive option.

According to these clinical evaluators, PerioPatch was well received by denture wearers who were tempted to put their dentures in an eternal effervescent water soak due to oral discomfort. It makes perfect sense – the PeriZone PerioPatch absorbs wound exudates, and in turn promotes natural healing.

What’s more, PerioPatch’s advanced formula also forms a protective seal over inflamed gingiva and oral mucosa, thus protecting them from further irritation that may be caused by eating or drinking… and denture wearing.

When it Comes to Oral Tissue Injury and Oral Pain, The Average First Aid Kit is Useless

Let’s face it, if you or someone in your family experience oral inflammation or an oral wound of any type, reaching for the box with the big red cross on it won’t do you much good.

And that’s too bad, because the need for oral mucosal first aid is pretty common in everyday life…Perhaps just as common as skinned knees, bug bites and paper cuts.

For example, if your “tween” is complaining about cheek irritation from orthodontic braces, band aids aren’t going to provide much help. Need relief from oral surgery pain? You won’t get it from the standard squeeze tube of antibiotic ointment. Are grandma’s new dentures causing oral ulcerations? Good luck with that rollof gauze pads!

Now that you think about it, it may be time to update your first aid kit with something developed specifically for oral wound management. That would be the PerioPatch® from PeriZone™, the oral health division of MIS Implants. PerioPatch absorbs excess wound exudates and promotes healing. It gives you effective relief, right on the spot.

PerioPatch is an easy to apply hydrogel wound dressing that has been proven to be effective in providing relief from gingival pain, periodontal surgery pain, and a variety of minor oral injuries such as pizza burns and cheek bites.

Throw a few packages of PerioPatch in your first aid kit and be prepared for the next minor oral injury…Anyone in the mood for pizza?

Orthodontics PerioPatch® Helps Orthodontic Patients “Brace” Themselves for Oral Inflammation

For orthodontic patients, the pursuit of straight teeth and an attractive smile often includes gingival inflammation and, in some cases, oral ulcerations and trauma. Despite their clinically proven functionality, metal orthodontic brackets and wires are foreign objects nestled between a patient’s teeth and sensitive oral mucosa. Inflamed gingival tissue is not a rare occurrence; in fact, orthodontic patients, especially new ones, are told to expect oral irritation.

The American Association of Orthodontists estimates that 4 million people in the United States undergo orthodontic treatment annually. That’s a lot of people who may be coping with oral wounds, such as cuts, abrasions, and sores on their lips, cheeks, and gums. The most common remedy for minor orthodontic wound management has been around for generations: “relief wax,” which the patient places between the site of oral inflammation and the orthodontic appliance, and a systemic anti-inflammatory, such as ibuprofen, or a pain reliever, such as acetaminophen.

What’s more, neither of these remedies actually promotes oral tissue healing. A more effective solution for orthodontic patients experiencing gingival or mucosal pain and irritation would be a wound management product that protects sensitive oral mucosa, relieves oral discomfort, and promotes natural healing.

PeriZone’s PerioPatch is such an oral health product. Specifically, it’s a hydrogel wound dressing that absorbs wound exudates, protects irritated oral mucosa from further abrasion, and relieves localized pain and inflammation without pharmaceutical products.

PerioPatch is an FDA-approved, easy-to-use dental health product that is dispensed exclusively through general practice dentists and dental specialists, such as orthodontists. Orthodontists are invited to participate in a free sampling program that enables licensed dentists to try PerioPatch on patients suffering from oral inflammation, mouth sores, or virtually any other type of oral wound. Practicing licensed dentists, including those who provide orthodontic therapy, can request their free PerioPatch sample courtesy of PeriZone by clicking here.

How Common are Irritated and Inflamed Gums?

As you may already know, there are wide variety of oral health and oral hygiene topics being covered in the traditional media and being discussed in social media. On any given day, you can be informed about everything from oral cancer, to tooth whitening, to the links between the bleeding gums of periodontal disease and their link to serious systemic afflictions such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

The subject of inflamed or irritated gums may not be getting the airtime of some of the oral health-related topics listed above, but you may be surprised to learn that many consumers are searching online for information and solutions ranging from what dentists and hygienists may classify as gingival inflammation or aphthous stomatitis, to what some lay persons may generically classify as oral wounds, mouth sores or mouth irritation.

The New York Times Online Health Guide states, “ Most mouth sores are cold sores (also called fever blisters), canker sores, or other (oral) irritation caused by:

  • A sharp or broken tooth or poorly fitting dentures
  • Biting your cheek, tongue, or lip
  • Burning your mouth from hot food or drinks
  • Braces
  • Chewing tobacco

The New York Times Online Health Guide also offers the following home remedies:

  • Avoid hot beverages and foods, spicy and salty foods, and citrus.
  • Gargle with cool water or eat popsicles. This is helpful if you have a mouth burn.
  • Take pain relievers like acetaminophen.

We would respectfully add to this list the use of PeriZone’s PerioPatch® for oral wound management and gum pain. Although the home remedies listed above may offer some level of relief, the use of PerioPatch may be more effective in reducing discomfort and promoting gum healing.

PerioPatch is a unique hydrogel wound dressing made from all-natural ingredients that absorbs wound exudates and thus alleviates gum pain while promoting gum healing.  FDA-approved PerioPatch also acts as a barrier that not only provides relief from the signs and symptoms of oral inflammation, but also prevents additional oral irritation or oral injury.

PerioPatch is easy to use and easily dispensed through the dental office – in fact PeriZone only distributes PerioPatch through participating dental offices. There is a free sample program that enables licensed dentists to try PerioPatch on a patient suffering from gum pain, inflamed gums or virtually any other type of oral wound, with no obligation. Practicing, licensed dentists can request their free PerioPatch sample courtesy of PeriZone by clicking here.

For those looking for relief from their oral irritation, gum pain and oral inflammation, PerioPatch delivers a highly effective and convenient wound management solution.

What is PerioPatch made of?

We recently received an email from Mary H., RDH from Ohio, who wrote:  “Our dental office just received samples of PeriZone PerioPatch, and I was wondering if you could tell us what the patch is made of?” Great question, Mary.  The ingredients are as follows:Ethylcellulose, polyacrylic acid, Sambucus nigra, castor oil, acacia gum, methyl hydroxylpropyl cellulose, glycerol, strawberry flavor, Centella asiatica, titanium dioxide, Echinacea purpurea, polysorbate 80, CI 77491.

The herbal ingredients, in combination, help the patch to adhere quite readily to gingival and mucosal tissue. The patch is held in place gently, yet firmly. If you try it for yourself, you will see that the hydrogel wound dressing is easy to apply and stays in place securely.

Although the PerioPatch itself is small in size, its oral wound management benefits are plentiful. The patch is beneficial in two ways: First, it acts as a physical barrier against outside irritants like food. Second, for patients with braces or removable appliances, it can protect an already irritated gums area and help ward off additional irritation.

Thanks for the question, Mary. Feel free to contact us again after you’ve had a chance to try it with some patients.
